Development of "XANTAR ™ XF Series" that is both PFAS-free and flame-retardant

XANTAR™️

Mitsubishi Chemical Group is pleased to announce that it has developed the XANTAR™ XF Series, a high-value-added polycarbonate resin that achieves high flame resistance and does not intentionally contain PFAS.

PFAS, an organofluorine compound, is a generic term for perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl compounds, and is used in materials that require flame resistance. In recent years, however, there have been concerns about environmental pollution and human health effects. Legislation to restrict the use of the substance has been discussed globally.

The XANTAR™ XF Series uses the newly developed flame retardant technology to achieve high flame resistance and does not intentionally contain PFAS. A flame resistance evaluation conducted by the MCG Group on 0.6mm thick material has confirmed a high flame retardancy equivalent to UL94 standard V-0. This material makes it possible to produce ultra-thin parts, contributing to weight reduction and space saving for information electronic equipment. Additionally, its high transparency, color development, surface hardness (pencil hardness: H), and heat resistance (glass transition temperature: 163°C) can be applied to various fields.

On April 3, 2023, the MCG Group acquired the XANTAR™ series of high-value-added polycarbonate resins to further strengthen its engineering plastics business. As a specialty materials group dedicated to offering innovative solutions, the MCG Group is committed to delivering high-value-added products like XANTAR™ to drive the realization of a sustainable society.
